There are many different reasons why someone or some company would want to buy a website. Below are some of the reasons why someone might buy a site. Remember it could be because of one or all of the reasons below.

Designing Ability

There are many people involved in web development who are not great programmers themselves. They may know a lot about promoting a site and have the resources to do so but building a site requires knowledge of web languages some people dont know or dont want to know. This is beneficial to those who can design good websites.

Time

Time is probably the reason that most webmasters and companies buy websites instead of building them themselves. The time saved from building the site can be used to promote their new site, promote other sites, build other sites etc.

Traffic

Another important reason. Established websites usually have traffic that new sites could take months or even years to get. Buying a site with traffic is sometimes a much more productive way of promoting a site than advertising through advertising networks etc so the buyer could place their own ads on the purchased site (including adverts to their other sites).

If the buyer already has a similar site to the one theyre buying they could even redirect the site to their own. This usually happens when companies merge.

The site being sold is undervalued

There is a number of reasons why a site could be undervalued.
  • The seller may be reluctantly selling the site due to personal reasons, For example cost or time of running the site or even family problems.
  • They may not know the true value of the site. This actually happens a lot when website owners dont maximise the possible revenue from their site.
Regardless of the reason, a site which is undervalued would prove a wise purchase for someone with some extra cash.

WebSiteFlipping

Buying a website with the sole intention of selling it on straight away or within a few months is sometimes known as WebSiteFlipping. The buyer takes advantage of the site being sold less than its worth or the buyer uses their own promotion and markting skills to increase the traffic to the site. The site would then be sold later when traffic, and therefore the price of the site, have increased.
